I am excited to be nearing the completion of my first commissioned painting obtained through my Etsy shop. The customer plans to give the finished product as a gift—and I was flattered she thought enough of my work to make the request.
My collection of work hasn’t included many commissions to date. Typically I study my subject, make several compositional sketches along with color notes, take multiple photos for details, and then execute the painting. But this presented a new challenge.
Creating the painting has been a very satisfying experience. The process included challenging myself and using my imagination to attempt to understand the meaning of the place and the landscape to the client. The client gave me full creative reign, which allowed me to transform a simple photograph into a fine piece of art.
I have stayed in touch with the client and provided her with status updates along the way. All have been positive, and I hope the receiver of this gift enjoys the piece as much as I enjoyed creating it.
As a result of this experience I look forward to working with more clients and creating more art that has special meaning for them. Commissions challenge me to work outside my comfort zone, and I sincerely believe this vehicle can only help me grow as an artist.
